Minnesota's Chicano/Latino population is growing

The Chicano/Latino population in Minnesota is increasing rapidly. Between 1990 and 2000, this population increased 166 percent to 143,000—the largest increase for a minority group in Minnesota. It's estimated that from 1990 and 2020, the growth rate for the Chicano/Latino population in Minnesota will be 178 percent—a sharp contrast to the estimated 15.5 percent overall growth rate for the state.

Public services are challenged to keep pace

Public services are hard-pressed to keep pace with this rapidly growing population. For the health/medical arena, meeting this challenge can mean saving lives. Improving Spanish-language skills will help the medical community improve health care of Spanish-speaking patients.
